Romeo and Juliet

As revelant today as ever, Shakespeare’s consummate tragedy of “star crossed” lovers swept into a catastrophic vortex of misunderstandings, secrets, violence and fate comes to the Shane Lalani Center for the Arts as the Blue Slipper presents William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, adapted and directed by Gillian Swanson, with performances from February 3rd-18th, with a special Valentine’s Day show on February 14th.

Set in a surreal, non-traditional Verona, a long, hot summer enflames an ancient fued between the Capulet and Montague families, leading to public brawls. As the tension builds in the streets, teeneagers Romeo (Evan Barrett) and Juliet (Audrey Laviolette) fall in love at first sight. Married in secret, they hope for reconciliation between their families. When short tempers lead to deadly consequences, the young lovers find themselves alone and on the run, facing impossible odds and making desperate decisions. What starts as a bawdy teenage comedy transforms into a heart-stirring romance for the ages, and features the shining lyricism of Shakespeare’s extrordinary poetry.

This production marks the first time both local theaters have joined forces to bring a show like this to the community. The cast of 27 includes actors of various ages, many whom are veterans of… Continue reading. . .
